Rutland now boasts a great cross-country schooling facility at South Luffenham

Simon Woolley

Richard and Victoria Jones have opened up their all-weather gallops and cross-country training field at South Luffenham to help individual riders competing at novice to advanced eventing, hunter trials and Pony Clubs, to educate and train their horses safely and in the correct disciplines.

The new facility is tailored to provide a first-class schooling experience for novice to advanced event riders, having already been in high demand with British Eventing for schooling clinics. The Team Jones yard regularly hosts clinics with some of the UK’s leading riders and coaches including Piggy French, Emilie Chandler and Mark Kyle. It is also proving popular with Riding and Pony Clubs, with Rutland Riding Club and the Woodland Pytchley Pony Club recently running sessions there.

The XC Training Fields at South Luffenham

The course, designed by Richard Jones and constructed by British Eventing’s Gold Level Course Builder Harry Williams, is built with well sanded take offs and landings to be a perfect early in the year run for more advanced horses. The jumps cover all the demands of more challenging courses and also allow novice horses to learn to cope with more challenging jumps in a less challenging format. Jumping options from ditches, banks and step combinations to a water complex can be selected and combined with the 750-metre circular all-weather gallops which includes a hill for fitness building. The team has just finished a full all-weather cross-country course to add to their facilities so that training can go on for youngsters and established eventers alike.

The British Equestrian Federation (BEF) has selected Rutland event rider Richard Jones as one of five event riders for the UK Sport World Class Podium Potential squad for 2019-2021. Team Jones is sponsored by leading horse feeds manufacturers Dodson and Horrell, sports photographers Julie Priestly, artist and photographer Deanne Ward, and IBA International media relations consultancy.
