Richard decided to retire Alfies Clover at jump 10 at Badminton Horse Trials this year after a rider error on the XC course took him out of the running for a top place at the 5* event.
His reaction after the event says it all “There’s no other horse I’d rather have been sat on out there, and I am gutted for him that I made the mistake coming out the lake. We were up on time and having a brilliant ride up to that point, with Alfie in cruise control and feeling at his very best."
“At 17 years of age, and with nothing left to prove, we had always planned to save him for another day had we incurred any problems."
“So, although very frustrated, I am happy to say we are bringing home a super fit and happy horse, and we are now already looking forward to Burghley. Huge thanks to everyone for all your well wishes this week.”
The campaign goes on with horse and rider to see if in 2024 they can bring it home to Rutland, the home of the Team Jones eventing yard and just a few miles away from the home of the Burghley Horse Trials event. Watch this space!
